In the previous blog we have covered how we address the backpain through yoga and Ayurveda. In this blog we look more types of backpain and the diet recommendations
1. Inflammatory Conditions
Chronic auto immune or immune-mediated conditions causing spinal inflammation.
Common Examples- Ankylosing spondylitis, sacro-ilitis, Reactive arthritis , psoriatic
arthritis.
Primary Anatomical Issue-Spinal joint inflammation.
Key Symptoms / Pattern
Persistent pain,
Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes which improves with movement
and exercises
Yoga Focus: Preserve posture and gentle spinal mobility
Avoid: Aggressive stretching and inactivity
Recommended Asanas:
Tadasana, Bhujangasana, Setu Bandha Sarvangasana, mild or supported Ustrasana,
Viparita Karani
2. Osteoporosis
Reduction in bone density making the spine fragile.
Common Examples- Osteoporosis, hip fractures, vertebral compression fracture risk.
Primary Anatomical Issue- low bone mass and deterioration of bone structure.
Secondary osteoporosis may also happen due to long term use of corticosteroids,
hormonal or endocrine disorders, chronic illness.
Key Symptoms / Pattern
Dull ache
Sudden pain
Height loss
Fracture risk
Stooped posture
Weakened grip
Brittle nails
Yoga Focus: Safe posture and gentle strengthening
Avoid: Forward bends and twisting movements
Recommended Asanas:
Tadasana, Utthita Tadasana, supported Vrikshasana, supported Setu Bandha
Sarvangasana, Shavasana
3. Lifestyle-Related Pain
Pain caused by daily habits and associated health conditions.
Common Examples- Poor posture, inactivity, or excess body weight, smoking, mental
health factors, contant constipation. Primary Anatomical Issue Increased pressure on
spinal joints and discs, reduced blood flow and oxygen supply to spine, muscle and
ligament strains.
Key Symptoms / Pattern
Pain
Muscle tension
Stiffness
Weakness
Yoga Focus: Correct posture and encourage regular movement
Avoid: Prolonged sitting and slouching
Recommended Asanas:
Tadasana, Katichakrasana, Ardha Chakrasana, Pawanmuktasana, Bhujangasana,
Shavasana
4. Injury or Trauma Recovery
Pain resulting from physical injury to back structures.
Common Examples- Lifting heavy weight, twisting,falls, accidents.
Primary Anatomical Issue- Tissue damage or instability, sprains, strains,fractures,
slipped disc.
Key Symptoms / Pattern
Acute pain,
Tenderness,
Muscle spasms,
Radiating pain
Numbness,
Tingling sensation
Limited movement
Yoga Focus: Protect healing tissues
Avoid: Intense asana and stretching injured areas
Recommended Asanas:
Shavasana, Makarasana, Supta Baddha Konasana, gentle Pawanmuktasana (only with
medical permission)
5. Infection or Serious Medical Conditions
Back pain caused by infection or serious disease affecting the spine, tumors.
Common Examples Osteomyelitis,Pyelonephritis,Discitis, Epidural abscesses,Pelvic
inflammatory diseases, Meningitis.
Primary Anatomical Issue- Staphylococcus involvement, other bacterial infections
involving Urinary tract, spinal cord infection,inflammation of membrane around brain
and spine.
Key Symptoms / Pattern
Constant pain,
Fever and chills,
Pain increasing at night,
Muscle spasms,
Weakness,
Tenderness in spine.
Yoga Focus: Medical supervision only
Avoid: All physical asana
Permitted Practices:
Shavasana and Makarasana
(Strictly under medical advice)
The diet recommendations for:
1. Inflammatory Conditions
Anti-inflammatory foods are recommended.
Include : Wholegrain cereals, healthy fats, Omega-3 fatty acid rich foods, lean cuts of
animals, oil fishes, Spices like ginger, turmeric, garlic, cinnamon, cloves etc,
antixodant and phytochemical rich vegetables.
Avoid : Too sour, fermented and processed food products.
2. Degenerative Conditons
Nutritious foods rich in protein, calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, magnesium etc for
Bone and muscle health.
Include : Dairy products, dark green coloured vegetables, Nuts, wholegrains, oil
fishes, Meat soups especially of Red meat (actively moving like Goat/lamb), organ
meats etc .
Avoid : long hours of fasting, skipping, eating less nutritious/processed food.
3. Lifestyle Associated Conditions
Modify healthy dietary habits Make sure to have regular bowel movements. Start the
day with warm water with /without 1-2 drops of lemon juice. Try to eat food at regular
timings. Try to have wholegrain cereal rich breakfast, healthy balanced lunch
including vegetarian and non vegetarian food and very light warm and early dinner
predominently with simple cooked vegetables and soups. Drink plenty of water
frequently in small amounts. Warm water/ herbal water can be taken regularly.
Seasonal fruits, nuts, dry fruits and seeds are snacking options.
